Frequently Asked Questions

We deliberately keep our prices as affordable as possible so that no child misses out on the assistance that they need. Educational psychology is not covered by Medicare, but it is possible to claim with some private health funds.

The most common Item Numbers are: Initial Consultation (Item IO2 or BUPA Item P100) and Psychological Assessment (Item PA6 or BUPA Item P950).

We also offer a discount for children with a government Health Care Card who do not qualify for NDIS funding. Please let us know if this applies to you.

An educational psychologist is a qualified professional who helps identify a child’s pattern of learning strengths and weaknesses and who helps identify and diagnose underlying learning disorders and other difficulties impacting school progress including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. An educational psychologist can also assess for cognitive giftedness.

Goodsir Assessment is based in Pennant Hills but children come to the clinic from all over Sydney and also from rural NSW. While we service the local area including West Pennant Hills, Cherrybrook, Carlingford, Normanhurst, Epping, Chatswood, Hornsby, Waitara, Turramurra, Dural, Castle Hill and Rouse Hill, we can take any client regardless of where they live.

An assessment at Goodsir Assessment only requires one ‘in-person’ visit to our clinic (approximately 2 hours) so you will not need to travel to the clinic more than once. The comprehensive report is sent via email with an invitation to make a time for a further phone consultation where you can discuss the report and ask any questions you may have about the results and recommendations.

Dyslexia affects up to 10% of Australian students although the severity can vary. Goodsir Assessment can assess and diagnose dyslexia and this can assist in ensuring that intervention is timely.

Fill out our Prebooking form and include any concerns you have about your child, and Emma Goodsir will review this information and get back to you with an appropriate assessment plan.

On the day of the appointment, your psychologist will chat with both of you for about 15 minutes to further explain the assessment and to get some more medical history. Then they will conduct the assessment which usually takes about 90 minutes. During the assessment portion you are free to wait in the waiting room or go grab a coffee if your child is happy for you to do this. If your child is particularly anxious you are welcome to sit in with them.

Please allow 2 weeks from the assessment date to receive the report. After the appointment your psychologist will take the results away, do the analysis, and write the full report which they will email to you. Once you’ve had time to digest the results, you are very welcome to give them a call directly, or email them and talk through any questions you may have. Emma and Amelia always endeavour to address all referral questions in the report and make appropriate recommendations.

There is nothing your child needs to do to prepare for the assessment. If they are feeling nervous you can reassure them that the assessment is not a ‘test’ and perhaps explain that Emma or Amelia will be doing some ‘activities’ with them to find out what their brain likes doing the best.
